A number of communities around South Africa have been impacted by adverse (mainly weather-related) events, in the first half of 2024. The Gift of The Givers Foundation has responded to over 100 disaster incidents spanning across all 9 provinces during this period. These incidents have included storms, flooding, fires, tornadoes and even water-restrictions due to adverse weather or infrastructure breakdowns. Regardless of the nature of the challenge, the organisation’s reputation as a considered and effective first responder on the ground in disaster areas is well known.
Massmart took the decision in 2014 to partner with The Gift Of The Givers Foundation to ensure we would be well positioned to tangibly demonstrate support and commitment to local communities affected by disaster events in areas in which we have a store presence. In a partnership that dates back 10 years, Massmart has partnered with The Gift Of The Givers Foundation on disaster relief projects in South Africa, Malawi and Mozambique. Throughout the partnership, the foundation notes that Massmart has contributed a wide range of products towards their relief efforts, including personal protective equipment (PPE), non-perishable food, personal care items and bottled water.
Commenting about the partnership, Charlene Louw, CSI Manager at Massmart says, “Massmart appreciates The Gift Of The Givers Foundation as the pre-eminent first responder to crisis incidents and has established a dedicated budget to provide in-kind product contributions to their relief activities in the Southern African Development Community. We particularly value their meticulous and intelligent approach to assessing response needs, which builds confidence that the contribution that we make will have the best possible impact.”
Massmart’s commitment to community support in areas in which we have a store presence also includes investing in food security and early childhood development initiatives with FoodForward SA and Hope Worldwide South Africa.
